1. Rally your employee volunteers around a specific day during National Volunteer Week. PG&E has had a very successful turn out of creating an annual day of service around Earth Day. They currently have over 60% of their Earth Day volunteer events full!

2. Gain some momentum with a popular volunteer event right before National Volunteer Week. In March, GE hosted PaintFest events in over 120 locations worldwide. More than 15,000 employee volunteers helped paint more than 380 murals that were donated to healthcare-related facilities worldwide.

3. Use National Volunteer Week to kick of registration for a signature event. Deloitte opens registration for its signature event, IMPACT Day during National Volunteer Week and has seen a dramatic increase in the number of employee volunteers registered.

National Volunteer Week is an exciting time to gather employees and create focusing volunteer events. Since this is such a good opportunity for a company, many hold their big events during this week. From some experience, I suggest that folks start planning their National Volunteer Week event just as soon as possible (that means spring or summer 2007)...

Working backwards, the planning itself will come easier, the press preparation/integration with the company PR department will arrive in time and you will have the opportunity to have some more relaxed, fun brainstorming sessions with your team.
